Amongst many other fascinating things, rhododendron is a big attraction to Bhutan. There are several places where entire areas can be seen in hues of pinks and whites during the flowering season changing the forests into magical land. The best time to live the rhododendron experience is from Mid March till end May. Bhutan boasts of 450 species of rhododendron so far. Apart from the rhododendron, you will also see other flowers like endemic orchids hanging from trees, magnificent magnolia and wild primulas.

Day 1  |  Arrival at the Paro International Airport

Druk Air flight to Paro is one of the most spectacular of all mountain flights. Whether flying along the Himalayan range from Kathmandu or over the foothills, each flight is a mesmerizing feat and offers exciting descent into the Kingdom. On arrival at the airport, received by our representative and then transfer to Thimphu, the modern capital town of Bhutan. If you arrive before lunch time, you will be served a picnic lunch Paro before your journey onwards to Thimphu.

Drive to Thimphu

Visit Trashichho Dzong, Thimphu

Trashichho Dzong is the centre of government and religion, site of King’s throne room and the seat of Je Khenpo or Chief Abbot. Built in 1641 by the political and religious unifier of Bhutan, Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, it was reconstructed in 1961 in traditional Bhutanese manner, without nails or architectural plans.

Day 2  |  Travel to Chelela

Chelela is a pass which is 3,800 metres and showcases many species of rhododendron. This pass is between the districts of Paro and Haa.

Day 3  |  Travel to Phobjikha

Phobjikha is a glacial valley. This place is one of the most important wildlife preserves in the country due to the Black Necked Cranes which migrate from Tibet to this place in the winter.

En route stop at the Dochula Pass

The mountain pass of Dochula offers you a view of the chain of Himalayan Mountains ranges on a clear sunny day. There are 108 stupas called “Druk Wangyel Chorten” which were built by Her Majesty the Queen Mother to honour His Majesty the Fourth King’s and his people for their victory in the war fought in the southern region of Bhutan in 2003 and for the benefit of all sentient beings.

Day 5  |  Travel to Sengor

Visit the Thrumshingla In-situ Rhododendron garden

The Thrumshingla National Park, established in 1998, has an area of 905 km2. This National park is home to some of the world’s most endangered flora and fauna. The In-situ Rhododendron Garden has 22 rhododendron species inside the garden.
